Root Canal Therapy

With more than 14 million of them done yearly, a root canal is one of the most traditional forms of dental work.

Non-Surgical Root Canals - Santa Rosa, CA

Your tooth center is made up of pulp which extends down canals in the center of the roots into the jaw bone. The pulp consists of blood vessels and nerve tissue that help sustain the health of the tooth. If the pulp is damaged by trauma, a deep cavity, a deep crack or exposed during a fracture of the tooth, it can get infected. Symptoms can arise such as prolonged sensitivity to hod and/or cold, difficulty chewing, swelling of the gum, jaw or face, or intense prolonged toothache pain. Sometimes the pulp will die and infection will be walled off by a person’s immune system for many years without any symptoms. Such silent infections are usually only detectable with an x-ray. Eventually these silent infections can break out and lead to significant pain and swelling. Santa Rosa dentist, Mark S. Frey is committed to assessing, diagnosing, and treating any potential dental issues before they become big problems.

Dental Fillings & Restorations

Root canal therapy removes the infected pulp and helps save your tooth. This particular treatment has a success rate of about ninety percent and brings much welcomed relief to someone suffering from a severe toothache. It is done using local anesthesia which gets the tooth profoundly numb and the procedure is generally painless. In fact, many of our patients have been known to fall asleep during the procedure. In most cases treatment can be completed in one visit. Once the diseased pulp tissue has been removed from the tooth center and the canals in the roots of the teeth, the remaining hollow space is sealed with a rubber-like gutta percha material. This filling material prevents any re-infection of the tooth. Once the tooth is sealed, your own immune system will get rid of any remaining infection and the tooth will feel completely normal after healing. Teeth that have had root canal therapy are more vulnerable to fracture afterwards, and in most cases, will require a crown to provide added support against chewing forces.
