]]> Parents often ask me at what age should their child be evaluated for braces. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends all children have an orthodontic check-up no later than 7 years of age. By this age children’s teeth have developed enough to where subtle problems can be spotted with jaw growth and emerging adult teeth.

Seeing kids by age 7 allows us to help with the following:

  • Guide jaw growth hopefully preventing the need to pull teeth to make room
  • Lower the risk of trauma to protruded front teeth
  • Correct harmful oral habits like thumb-sucking
  • Improve appearance and self-esteem
  • Guide permanent teeth into a more favorable position
  • Improve the way lips meet
